MCDONOUGH COUNTY, ILL. -- The McDonough County Historical society is giving a covered wagon pioneer a proper grave marker.

According to the McDonough County Voice, a sign now marks the grave of Amanda Peterson, who died in 1910 when her family was traveling across Illinois.

The push to get a marker for the historic grave began when property owners discovered a small memorial sunken into the ground when they were installing a new fence.

This single monument cemetery is a home's front yard in the southwest quarter of Section 6 in Colchester Township in McDonough County.

Peterson was on a wagon ride across Illinois when she got sick and died where she was buried. Her relatives returned later to mark her grave.
