FORT MADISON, IOWA -- The Fort Madison Fire Department says it was unable to find a cause of Saturday's fire at the Feinberg's Scrap Metal yard.

Lt. Neal Gathers with the fire department says the fire caught onto a large amount of tires and some switchgrass in the back lot of Feinberg's as well as some brush piles on the dumping ground of Ready Mix just before 5 p.m.

Gathers says the fire quickly turned into an "all call" for Fort Madison crews due to the location of the fire.

"Tires on fire make it even more difficult," Gathers said.

Volunteer fire crews from Montrose and a tanker truck were called in about thirty minutes later to help.

Crews contained the fire by 8 p.m. Saturday. Gathers says he hopes to have more answers in the daylight.

No buildings were damaged in the fire.

Staff at Feinberg's recently decided to close temporarily. The Fort Madison Daily Democrat reports it was due to the retirement of Betty Feinberg. The company's statement said it will reopen, but did not say when. The company has been helping area residents recycle their scrap metal for several decades. The business is located at the foot of 18th Street.
