HARRISBURG, PA. (AP) -- Six states, including Illinois, are accusing R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company of violating a nine-year-old ban on the use of cartoons to support cigarette ads.
The states are filing lawsuits Tuesday to target a section in the November edition of Rolling Stone. The magazine combines nine pages of Camel cigarette ads and pages of magazine-produced illustrations around the theme of independent rock music.
California, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington also are suing.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett says the spread "flies in the face" of efforts to halt tobacco marketing to children.
And Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan accuses R.J. Reynolds of using its ads "to lure young people into a deathly habit."
An R.J. Reynolds spokesman hasn't responded to a request for comment.
