QUINCY, ILL. -- It was a record breaking day at Upper Moorman Park Saturday.

More than 300 people took part in Quincy's Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge. Together, they raised $51,244. 331 for Special Olympics. Both numbers are the highest Quincy's Polar Plunge has seen to date.

Each plunger was required to raise seventy five dollars in donations. Organizers say this year's participants went above beyond, some raising over one thousand dollars.

"You have a bunch of people that do fundraising for individuals that some of them don't even know and then on top of that, they come out and jump in a lake," said Jill Reffett, the West Central Illinois Special Olympics area director.

The money raised from the event will go to local Special Olympic athletes. It will help pay for their lodging, transportation and food when they attend competitions.
