CLARKSVILLE, MO. -- A 77-year-old man is safe after a train struck his abandoned car.

The northbound BNSF train struck the car about 7 a.m. Wednesday two miles south of Clarksville near Highway 79, Pike County Sheriff Stephen Korte said.

The vehicle belonged to James Adams, who had been reported missing a few hours earlier. The Missouri Highway Patrol reported that Adams suffers from dementia.

Adams was not in the car at the time of impact. The Clarksville Fire Department found him about a mile and a half away from the crash site. Paramedics evaluated him at the scene but he had not reported injuries.

MHP will continue to investigate the crash.
