QUINCY, ILL. -- With the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic fast approaching, interest is building up across the Tri-States for the historic occasion.

A handful of local restaurants are preparing a special dinner in memory of the event, a hot ticket evening during the anniversary weekend. KHQA got a sneak peek at the preparations taking place at The Main Course in Quincy.

"My whole premise is that we use the best ingredients that we can source because back in 1912 they had the best ingredients then," Owner and Executive Chef Kevin Minnick said.

Second best just won't cut it for the weekend of April 14 and 15. From Steak Forester to squab and duck, the kitchen of The Main Course will be cooking up some high class cuisine. That's no easy task.

"We're going to prepare and cook the entire menu and break it down into 14 courses," Minnick said.

While the Titanic's last meal reportedly consisted of ten to eleven courses, guests at The Main Course will get a few more. That's entrees, desserts and about 6 or 7 different types of wine.

"We're going to do Salmon with Mousseline. Mousseline sauce is very similar to a hollandaise, a classic lemon sauce, and we have some fresh Blackmouth Chinook Salmon that we're going to poach," Minnick said.

Just the preparations alone will be an event.

"I'm very excited. Nervous in a way. It is 14 courses. We do have a lot of work," Minnick said, which is why he's hired help. Colleague William Julian as well as Cory Shupe from Thyme Square in Quincy are also on board.

"It's a lot of fun to do tasting menus, small plates and to really work with our customers in a roller coaster pattern throughout the dining experience," Minnick said.

Close to 80 reservations have been confirmed for the 14-course meal that will cost $200. Minnick says there are few left.

LaBinnah Bistro in Hannibal prepared a similar but scaled down version of the Titanic's last meal Wednesday night for $37.50 a ticket. The event received such high remarks, the owners are looking into possibly hosting the night again in April.

The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis is also doing its own version of the Titanic's last supper at a cost of $500.

The RMS Titanic was a passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City.
