The Fort Madison City Council will appoint its next mayor opting out of holding a special election.

The council made the decision at Tuesday night's meeting.

The need to appoint a new mayor came in the wake of former mayor Steve Ireland's death.

The 53-year-old Ireland died March 20.

The council is expected to make the appointment at its April 17 meeting.

City Manager Byron Smith said Tuesday that the city is expected to save about $6,000 by avoiding the election.

The council can appoint anyone who is a resident of Fort Madison and who is eligible to vote
