JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- A group representing state parks supporters says it has sued to stop the reconstruction of the Taum Sauk reservoir.
The mountaintop reservoir in southeast Missouri failed in December 2005. The resulting flood wiped out the nearby Johnson Shut-Ins State Park.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has given Ameren Corporation approval to rebuild the reservoir for its hydroelectric plant. The utility also recently announced a legal settlement with the state calling for the reservoir to be rebuilt.
A lawsuit by the Missouri Parks Association claims federal officials failed to adequately study the environmental impact of rebuilding the reservoir or of other alternatives.
The lawsuit asks a federal judge to issue an injunction barring the reconstruction.
