CANTON, MO. -- Whenever you drive on Routes 61, P or 16 in Canton ... slow down.

MoDOT has decided to reduce the speed limit through most residential areas of the community from 35 to 25 miles per hour.

The new speed limit signs will go up some time this month.

The decision to reduce the speed limit came as the result of traffic and speed studies that MoDOT conducted in the community. Officials say it will improve safety in residential areas.

Here are the areas where speed limits be lowered:

North Business Route 61 from White Street north two blocks to Henderson Street.

South Business Route 61 from Montgomery Street south 3 blocks to Marion Street (including the area near the city park.)

On Route P the speed limit change will be extended two blocks from West Drive west to the US61 east outer road.

On MO16 from 6th street west to 8th street.
