QUINCY, ILL. -- Sometimes the price on a gallon of gas seems to go up by a dime or two and then a few weeks later it goes back down.

To help try and offset the cost of the high price of gas and the cost associated with filling up some cars, there's a Quincy business that's trying to help people save some money.

Terry Traeder and his family have been in the motorcycle business for quite awhile and it was back in 2006 when Traeder decided to get into the scooter side of the motorcycle industry. Scooter sales hit the highwater mark in 2008 and now in 2012, the sales aer starting to pick back up once again. 

"We're seeing customers come back in, they're really concerned about the cost of their transportation. So when we're offering things with up to 132 mpg, we can literally show them how they can probably get the bike for free," Traeder said.

One of the newer trends in the scooter industry is the availability of three wheelers or otherwise what are known as trikes.They range from having a kit installed on a smaller 50 cc scooter, all the way up to having a 400 cc unit with the ability to back up from a parking spot or inside a garage.

"With the trike system, you can get on it and operate it so easy. It has reverse assist if you need to help getting it out of the garage or parking area. It has reverse assist to it. So yeah, I mean they've become a real friendly to people that are non motorcycle people," Traeder said.

Prices on the new ones start at around $2,500 and go up from there. As far as what kind of license you need, for a unit 50 cc and lower all you need is a standard drivers license. For anything larger, you need a special classification and a drivers road test is required in Illinois. Traeder says his business will even go as far as trying to help you pass your exam.

Traeder said if you plan to license a scooter in Illinois, it doesn't matter what size it is, it will still cost you $134 for license and title. Plus you'll have to pay sales tax on the purchase as well.
