A contractor struck a gas main Wednesday afternoon prompting some evacuations in a Quincy neighborhood.

Residents in the area of 8th and Kentucky streets were asked to leave their homes about 2:30 p.m. after the leak was reported.

Ameren Illinois spokesman Leigh Morris said that the gas didn't migrate into homes or sewers and that residents in the area were not in danger.

The Quincy Fire Department evacuated homes as a precaution.

Ameren customers in the area should expected restoration of their service by 6 p.m, Morris said.
