Memorial Day weekend also means the official start of the summer grilling season.

If you are the gas grill type or prefer a charcoal grill, there are some important safety tips to remember to keep you and your family safe during summer cook-outs.

Nearly half of all injuries involving either charcoal and gas grills are thermal burns, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Using grilling utensils and a fire proof grilling mitt are two ways to safeguard against burns on the hands and arms.

One of the most important safety tips to keep in mind is location.

"You want to make sure that it is away from anything flammable," Brad Koetters with the American Red Cross said. "Grills can drop grease and ash so you do not want it to be on a deck or around any dry leaves or grass."

Having an open flame close to your house could cause a fire or even melt the siding on your home.  When using a gas grill, check the gas tank hose for any leaks before firing it up for the first time this year.
