A Macomb man appeared in federal court in Peoria Monday charged with five counts of wire fraud, 10 counts of money laundering and three counts of filing false tax returns.

A 15-page indictment filed earlier this month says that Robert R. Kelly defrauded investors out of $4.4 million over a six-year period.

Kelly was indicted May 17. He's accused of starting several companies include Mustang Generators Inc., Mustang Wireless Group, 21 Sentry Technologies, among others.

According to the indictment, Kelly courted investors by promising huge cash returns when the companies went public. The U.S. Attorney's Office alleges otherwise.

The court filings also says that Kelly created phony stock certificates that he sent to his investors.

The case is scheduled to go to trial July 30 before Senior U.S. District Judge Joe B. McDade.

He faces jail time and fines if convicted.
