DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- The Iowa Board of Education is considering changes to eligibility rules for student athletes.

The so-called "no pass, no play" policy would up the penalty high school athletes face for failing a class from being benched 20 school days to 30 calendar days.

It would also penalize students in any sport, not just the ones they've previously played.

Board member Mary Jean Montgomery says the move is to ensure students are learning and getting support they need.

She says the board will look into how the rule could impact students and take public comments.

Some members say the proposed rule isn't strict enough. They say school districts are welcome to make their own standards tougher.

The board will hold a final vote in the spring.
