Clayton woman displaced after early morning house fire

Just before 2 this morning, firefighters were called to a home just off Highway 24 east of Clayton after reports of smoke in the home.

CLAYTON, ILL. -- UPDATED: June 18 at 9:05 a.m.

No one was injured in an early morning fire Monday in Clayton.

Clayton Fire Chief Sam Miller said the fire began in the kitchen of a home on East Outer Drive just outside of Clayton, Illinois. The cause of the fire is electrical, Miller said.

Just before 2 Monday morning, firefighters were called to the home just off Highway 24 east of Clayton after reports of smoke in the home.

The homeowner Emma Blair escaped safely before firefighters arrived.

Highway 24 was closed for less than an hour to allow crews to stretch water lines to the home.

Crews tore out portions of the walls and roof to search for any additional hot spots.

ORIGINAL STORY: June 18 at 3:10 a.m.

Highway 24 east of Clayton is back open as of 2:45 a.m. Monday morning after firefighters battled a structure fire.

Adams County dispatch has confirmed the closure is to allow fire crews to establish and drag water lines to the home on East Outer Drive just outside of Clayton.

KHQA's Tegan Orpet was on the scene and spoke with Clayton Fire Chief Sam Miller.  He suspects the fire is electrical in nature, but an official cause is not expected until later on this morning.

In the meantime crews are tearing out portions of the walls to search for any additional hot spots.
