HANNIBAL, MO. -- The North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) has started a new program geared toward helping the elderly because of the rising temperatures.

"Chilling at 60" is a project program that provides fans and air conditioners to senior citizens that meet income qualifications.

The organization will use some of its United Way funds to get the program up and running. But NECAC needs your help to keep it going.

As of right now the project has two fans.

NECAC is accepting any donations.

It will also be applying for grants to help fund the program.

"They have a limited income I mean it's social security most of them are getting and social security doesn't really increase or give you a lot to live off of and some of them have extreme health conditions," Melissa Williams, Marion County NECAC coordinator said. "So we figured that was the best population to start this program with and then hopefully if we can continue it we can make it a broader program."

To apply or donate to the program you can contact the NECAC Hannibal office. If you are applying make sure to have your social security card and picture I.D. If you would like an air conditioner NECAC officials are asking applicants to bring a doctors note requesting that you need one.
