QUINCY, ILL. -- The Illinois school code has changed for the 2012-2013 school year.

Now 6th and 9th graders are required to have the pertussis vaccine.

More whooping cough cases have been reported nationwide but none in Adams County.

To help keep it that way, the Adams County Health Department held an special immunization clinic Saturday.

From 11 p.m. till 2 p.m., Adams County residents were able to get up to date with their vaccinations before the school year starts.

The health department is urging not just children but also adults to get the pertussis vaccination.

"Pertussis or whooping cough very often is contracted by adults and the its given to small children and of course it can be fatal if complications arise," Jan Hummel from the Adams County Health Department said.

The Adams County Health Department is open for immunizations on Mondays, 1 p.m. till 6 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. till 4 p.m.
