The cause of a fire at Tri-State Furniture in Fort Madison remains unknown, but the owners do know that they will reopen the business.

FORT MADISON, IOWA -- The Fort Madison, Iowa fire department brought in heavy equipment to assist in the investigation in a weekend fire that destroyed a furniture store.

Fire Chief Joey Herren said the 4-alarm fire broke out at 4:12 a.m Sunday in the rear of the building, located at 504 Ave. G.

Heavy smoke and flames were seen shooting out of windows and the building's roof.

More than 40 firefighters from Ft. Madison, Montrose, West Point and Keokuk fire departments assisted in the fire. Herren said no one was injured. The building was vacant at the time when the fire broke out. Herren said the owners were in St. Louis. They'd used the second story as a storage area.

The State Fire Marshal was on scene Monday to further investigate the cause of the fire.

Tri-State Furniture has been in business in Fort Madison since 1931 and according to the Fort Madison Daily Democrat, they definitely plan to reopen the business. Right now, they aren't sure whether they will rebuild or relocate.
