QUINCY, ILL. -- What does it take to make you smile?

Would a good buy on roses, or maybe a free rose do the trick?

The Harrison Street Hy-Vee store has been holding its million stem roses sale for part of this month.

The store does this every year where customers can get a single rose for 50 cents.

This year, employees got in on the action and the checkers held a contest to see who could sell the most.

A customer could also buy a rose for 50 cents to donate to an area nursing home resident.

800 roses were delivered Tuesday to four nursing homes.

"We wanted to pay tribute back to our customers and to give a helpful smile to the nursing homes themselves," Floral Manager Lorie Minor said.

While the official sale is over, there are roses left.

If you'd like to snag a rose for 50 cents, new shipments are still due in this week.
