MT. STERLING, ILL. -- A Mount Sterling golf course groundskeeper is in hot water for stealing it from the city's lake.

According to the Jacksonville Journal Courier, officials have charged 30-year-old Thomas Hoaglin with theft under $500 from government-supported property.

He's accused of pumping water from Mount Sterling Lake to the Rolling Greens Golf Course even after the course was told to stop ... because of the lake's low water level.

The Brown County prosecutor is still looking into whether Hoaglin acted with criminal intent or whether it was an honest mistake.
