QUINCY, ILL. -- A Quincy family got wonderful news Friday night after their mare and colt had been missing for more than 24 hours.
Sometime after 8 p.m. Thursday night, a fence was intentionally cut on David Clinard's property and the family's black mare and her 4-month-old colt were feared stolen. Click here to read KHQA's original story.
In a turn of events, the family got a call from a landowner about 5 miles south of Quincy at around midnight Friday saying that the mare and colt were discovered across the fence from horses on the property there.
"While the fence was intentionally cut, the horses were successfully recovered in the area and I am so grateful to the great people who found my horses, all the support from the community and especially the work of the Adams County Sheriff's Department, the City of Quincy Police and the Adams County Animal Warden," Jill Churchill told KHQA in an email Saturday morning.
The Adams County Sheriff's department originally found hoof prints leading from the back of the pasture, up a steep hill, and down 48th street. About a half mile down the road the hoof prints disappeared.
"These were show horses, but really in our case, they were just pets. The baby was just four-months-old and so it was just a big pet. Both of them were just big pets to us, so the emotional side is tough," owner David Clinard said.
A plea for information was posted on the Lost and Found Pets of Adams County page and the community rallied around the owners via social media.
