Quinn signs bill into law on Tuesday
ILLINOIS (AP) -- The age that you can take your kids to be vaccinated by pharmacists in Illinois has been dropped.
On Tuesday Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill that lowers the vaccination age from 14 down to 10.
The law the went into effect immediately still required the children to have a prescription from a doctor.
Governor Quinn says that the timing of this new law was crucial because of children headed back to school.
He also says it will improve access to healthcare for kids in the state, especially as concerns over a whooping cough epidemic grow.
So far this year more than 1,300 cases of whooping cough have been reported in Illinois.
That's compared to 1,500 reported cases last year.
