State educators want to see more participation in program

MISSOURI (AP) -- We've all heard it said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Missouri's top educators agree with that and want to make sure that every kid in the state starts out the day with a good breakfast.

Missouri Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro says that last year only 22% of Missouri kids got a breakfast at school.

She want to see a significant increase in that number.

So the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is teaming up with the Midwest Dairy Council on a new initiative called the Missouri School Breakfast Challenge.

School superintendents across the state are being urged to increase participation in the breakfast program by 20% this school year.

And as added incentive the districts that show the greatest increase are eligible to win cash prizes up the $4,000.
