CANTON, MO. -- Culver-Stockton students will have a unique new opportunity this year.
A brand new state-of-the-art recording studio was built with funds from a large alumna donation.
The studio is well equipped with an 85% noise resistant whisper room, as well as, "...heavy duty computer and monitors plus the software for recording sound and video plus a whole array of microphones and synthesizers," Professor Tom Polette explained.
The studio has a lot of potential to help, students, staff, and even the surrounding community.
"Going back and listening to myself, making personal improvements ... that's going to be a big thing," Sophomore Music Major Derek Benton explained.
So what will the college do with all of the new professional equipment?
"That's the million dollar question, isn't it?" asked Professor of Music Tom Polette. "This really opens up a whole new world for us which is professional level recording for all of our students to do their own projects."
Student performances in the auditorium can now be recorded live to help students improve their techniques and build an electronic portfolio of their work.
"It's very exciting that we have the state-of-the-art software for video and audio recording on the computers here. Someone could be producing a movie if they want on the software, producing sound tracks on that software, doing vocal dubs, doing all those kinds of things," Associate Professor of Music Trent Hollinger said.
The music department is even looking into partnerships with local businesses, but for music students, the convenience and cost-savings is the biggest perk.
"Here we have the capabilities, we have it free, so if you really needed to perform for an hour or two, instead of paying $175, $275, we have that free capability. So, it will benefit us," Sophomore music student Derek Boren said.
The music department is still adding a few last minute touches to the studio, but it should be up and running for students this semester.
