Eight injured in Parking Lot Accident in Carthage

CARTHAGE, ILL. -- Carthage Police are investigating an accident that injured eight people in the parking lot of Illini West High School. Beverly Lovell, 71, of Burnside, Illinois suffered shortness of breath while driving her van after the Friday night high school football game. She was backing out of a parking space when she lost control of the vehicle, spun 360 degrees approximately three times. Police say the van struck nine pedestrians before Lovell was able to stop the van. 

The accident happened at approximately 9:43 p.m. near the main gate of the parking lot.

Air Evac 59 airlifted one adult female to Blessing Hospital, she was later transferred to Peoria. Two 19-year-old males received minor bumps and cuts but did not seek medical attention. One middle school female student was taken by private vehicle for treatment, and one male and three female Illini West High School students were transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Carthage with minor injuries.

The Carthage Police Department was assisted by Hancock County Sheriff’s Department deputies and dispatchers, Illinois State Police, Carthage Clipper Fire Department, Air Evac 59, Warsaw Ambulance, Carthage Ambulance, IWHS Staff, IWHS Athletic Trainer, several area nurses and numerous citizens.

The Carthage Police Department would like to thank all these agencies and citizens for their assistance and concern for the victims.
