Amish buggy driver dies hours later

CANTON, MO. -- UPDATED: August 31 at 2:46 a.m.

An Amish man has died after his horse-drawn buggy was hit near Canton Thursday afternoon.

Police say a utility vehicle was headed north on Highway 61 when it crashed into the buggy driven by 42-year-old Chris Yoder of Canton. He was thrown from the buggy on impact.

The buggy driver was taken by helicopter to Blessing hospital where he died before 8 o'clock Thursday night.

Traffic on Highway 61 was rerouted through Canton as crews lifted the broken wagons' spokes into the bed of a truck.

The horse pulling the buggy did not survive the crash.

A utility truck rear-ended a horse drawn buggy Thursday afternoon on U.S. 61 near Canton, Missouri.

The Canton Fire Department, along with the Lewis County Sheriff's Department and the Missouri Highway Patrol responded to the accident that occurred somewhere between 4:30 and 4:45 p.m.

According to the Canton Police Chief, Hayes Shelley, the driver of the truck is fine. One of the passengers in the buggy was taken by helicopter to the hospital.

The horse has died.

The Missouri Highway patrol is still trying to get the highway reopened.

Remnants of the buggy are being placed into a pickup truck.

The Missouri Highway Patrol has confirmed that an officer is en route to a buggy/truck accident on U.S. 61 near Canton, Mo.

The Canton Fire Department, along with the Lewis County Sheriff's Department and the Missouri Highway Patrol are responding to a truck versus horse and buggy crash that occurred between 4:30 and 4:45 p.m. Thursday.

A helicopter is also being dispatched to take victims from the accident scene to a local hospital.
