A Missouri Highway Patrol crash reconstruction team spent Friday morning taking measurements in an attempt to piece together what caused a fatal crash that killed a member of Northeast Missouri's Amish community.

MHP spokesman Brent Bernhardt said that it's still unclear what led to the Thursday crash that saw  Michael J. Fulton, 52, smash a utility vehicle into the rear of a horse-drawn buggy driven by Chris Yoder, 42, of Canton.

The crash occurred on Highway 61 between the two Canton exits. Yoder was taken to Blessing Hospital by helicopter where he was later pronounced dead.

As of Friday, no charges were filed against Fulton. Bernhardt said that will depend on what the outcome of the ongoing investigation. Information collected by the reconstruction team will be forwarded to Lewis County Prosecuting Attorney Jules De Coster who will then determine whether charges are appropriate in the case.

“There certainly is a possibility,” Bernhardt said when asked whether criminal charges could be filed in the wake of the crash. “They're going through all of that stuff and doing the technical reconstruction now.”

The crash closed a large stretch of the busy highway shortly before 5 p.m. Remnants of the broken buggy littered the highway. The horse pulling the buggy also died.
