QUINCY, ILL. -- Quincy Public Schools saw a more than one-percent decrease in enrollment while Quincy's Christian schools are seeing a slight increase in students.

The district saw a 1.1 decrease in the first days of the 2012 school year. At this time last year, the district had 6,662 students. This year that figure stands at 6,590.

The schools seeing the decrease were Baldwin Intermediate School, Quincy Junior High School and four elementary schools.

Adams, Madison and Washington elementary schools saw gains.

A drop in enrollment could mean less money for city schools. Aid is based on student population.

Meanwhile, Quincy Catholic Elementary Schools experienced their first enrollment increase since the 1997-98 school year for its K-8 programs.

"Thanks must be given to our QCES parents who entrust their children and their children’s education to our four elementary schools, and who support what we do by being ambassadors for our schools and sharing with others why they’ve chosen a Catholic elementary school education for their children,” Paul Rittof, executive director of the Quincy Catholic Elementary Schools Foundation said.

Last year's overall enrollment increase of eight students was attributed to an increase of 14 students in Pre-School Programs. This year's Pre-K enrollment increase is currently at 18 students.

Quincy Notre Dame High School also announced earlier this year that its enrollment had increased.
