MACOMB, ILL. -- Ninety percent of American teenagers expect a response to a text within the first 5 minutes.

The city of Macomb says that text can wait.

That's the message it's sending to teenage drivers.

Mayor Mike Inman proclaimed Wednesday, September 19th as "No Text on Board, Pledge Day."

It coincides with Governor Quinn declaring September as "Texting and Driving Awareness Month."

Other agencies on board are AT&T Illinois and IDOT.

Mayor Inman says a recent study revealed those who text while driving are 23 times more likely to crash.

"It's illegal, and I think most people know that. But in spite of that, statistics show that 43 percent of teenage drivers do it anyway, even knowing that. I know it's part of their culture and we're trying to appeal to them to make that cultural shift and make them realize what danger they're putting not only themselves but other people, pedestrians, bicyclists and everyone on the road," Inman said.
