HANNIBAL, MO. -- Residents of the Tri- State area gathered to clean up the shores of the Mississippi River Saturday.

The Great Mississippi River Cleanup is an event held by the Living Lands and Waters organization.

Around 30 people attended the clean up in Hannibal. John Bostrom works for Living Lands and Waters. He says the goal of the organization as a whole is to further the beautification and restoration of America's rivers.

The organization covers five states, starting in St. Paul, Minnesota, and running down to St. Louis, Missouri.

"Today was very successful. Had a great group of volunteers today and we got a good amount of garbage, so absolutely successful day today," Bostrom said.

More than thirty cities are involved in the organization, with about one thousand volunteers. Bostrom is confident that people will continue the cleaning efforts in years to come.
