KEOKUK, IOWA -- A dredging crew near Keokuk uncovered a stolen rental car at the bottom of the Mississippi River, police chief Dave Hinton said.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers crew was dredging on the Keokuk waterfront Wednesday near the George M. Verity River Museum when the pumps began to spew car parts.

A dive team was sent below to investigate and found the red 2009 Chevrolet Aveo buried beneath the sediment. The car was buried so deep that a crane was required to pull it out of the water.

Hinton said the car was stolen from outside a residence at 201 N. First Street. He believes the car was a rental.

“It was pretty banged up,” Hinton said of the car.

No arrests have been made.
