QUINCY, ILL. -- For more than a quarter of a century, the City of Quincy has been designated as a Tree City USA.
There are many requirements the city has to fulfill to keep that designation and one of them is to sponsor an annual tree planting program.
For just $30 city residents can pick out a tree they like from what's offered by the city and have it planted in their yard.
"These trees are purchased from the city and they're put on city right-a-way and they will be planted by city crews. We want to put the right tree in the right place, so if you have some overhead lines and that and utilities, we'll want to do a shorter version, if not we'll get a taller version," Quincy City Engineer Jeff Steinkamp said.
Most of the trees are just a couple of inches in diameter and are about eight to ten feet tall. They also come from a local nursery and they've been maintained up until they get planted in a person's yard. Steinkamp said all of the planting will probably take place next month.
"We're asking the residents that purchase a tree to make sure they keep it well watered. Even though we've had some recent rains, the soil conditions are still extremely dry. We ask the residents to maintain the tree, take care of it and watering would be the best thing to do," Steinkamp said.
There are only about 80 trees that are available. There are varying heights, colors and kinds of trees that people can choose from. They include varieties of maple, cherry, red bud and even lilac's. All available on a first come first serve basis.
