Math Day gives students a chance to practice math skills in the real world
QUINCY, ILL. -- There is more than one way to teach a math class.
Some local school kids found that out when they took their math skills on the road.
KHQA's Josh McGhee takes you inside an innovative classroom project.
"What would you use to make 84 cents? "
"A quarter."
That's the response that one student gave during a very special school day.
On Tuesday, students from Monroe and Berrian Elementary in Quincy flocked to Hy-Vee for Math Day.
"We had to count the cakes. Count all of them that's not sliced in half," student Kiara Scriven said.
Math day is an interactive way to help students in kindergarten through third grade apply what they've learned in class.
"They're counting oreos or how many eggs are in a dozen. The teachers put together the questions and what they want them to learn for this year. They learn about math. They learn about shopping at the same time," Hy-Vee store manager Steve Labs said.
"We had to see how many eggs are in a dozen," student Mika Gravitt said.
The teacher generated worksheets that were filled out at the store and will be reviewed Wednesday in class.
The class with the most participation will receive a pizza party.
"The parents are actually helping the kids with their assignments and it's a family thing," Steve Labs said.
Math day is a partnership between Quincy school districts and Hy-vee.
