DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa had a record turnout for Thursday night's Democratic caucuses.
Projections show a turnout of more than 220,000 for Democrats, compared to 124,000 who showed up for Democratic caucuses in 2004.
Most early projections estimated about 150,000 Democrats would caucus.
Turnout is also large on the Republican side, where projections show about 114,000 taking part.
The last contested Republican caucuses in 2000 drew more than 87,000 in caucuses.
The Iowa Democratic Party's communication director calls the participation "incredible."
The Democratic chairman at one precinct says he ran out of his registration forms after starting out with 250. Another chairman says his challenge was finding enough space for so many participants.
At a school in West Des Moines, where eight separate caucuses were being held in different rooms, there were hundreds of people waiting in line when the cut-off time approached. They were allowed to caucus.
