HANNIBAL, MO. -- A Tony Award-winning musical that stormed Broadway in the 1960's promises to wow theater-goers in Hannibal.

The large cast of Bye Bye Birdie is putting together the final touches for the Hannibal High School production.

The musical cast and crew are very excited or the opening night of Bye Bye Birdie,” said Sara Kurz, the staff director. “They are working very hard in rehearsals to prepare a wonderful show.”

The cast and crew have a lot to live up to. The musical has been a favorite of theater departments everywhere since its debut in 1961. It was nominated for eight Tony Awards, including a win for best actor by Dick Van Dyke.

The scene is set in the 1950's and tells the story of Albert and Rosie, songwriters and management for teen idol Conrad Birdie. Even if you're not familiar with the storyline, you're sure to recognize some of the songs, especially the hit “Put On A Happy Face.”

The musical makes its debut in at the Hannibal High School Auditorium on November 8 at 7:00 p.m. Performances are also set for November 9 and 10. Tickets are available for $8 at the HHS office or at the auditorium on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.
