(AP) -- Missouri's treasurer is telling residents of the state to hang on to their expired gift cards.

State Treasurer Clint Zweifel says that if someone in the state thinks that their gift card has become unclaimed property they should check with the business were it was purchased and see if it can be redeemed.

He also recommends the residents of the state check the Missouri unclaimed property database.

Zweifel says that his office has almost $6.2 million in unclaimed property from unused gift cards and certificates.

His office has already returned more than $107,000 from cards that have expired.
