NOVELTY, MO. -- A Novelty, Mo. man is accused of shooting a neighbor to death in an ongoing dispute.

Glenn Head, 58, 190 Rural Route 1 is charged in Tuesday's shooting death of 67-year-old William “Bill” Bacon.

Judge Bill Alberty of Knox County presided over the arraignment at 9 a.m. Thursday in Kirksville at the Adair County Courthouse.

Charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the shooting were filed Wednesday and Head is being held on $250,000 cash only bond.

Bacon died in the Northeast Regional Medical Center emergency room. The shooting occurred about 3:30 p.m. near County Road 312. A copy of the criminal complaint field Wednesday said that Bacon was shot in the chest.

Knox County Coroner Jeffrey Doss is taking Bacon's body to Columbia, Mo. where an autopsy will be performed. He said the official results of the examination won't be known for “several days.”

An initial report said that Head and Bacon had an ongoing dispute over whether a county road was opened or closed. A probable cause statement filed with the criminal charges said that Bacon contacted the Knox County Sheriff's Office Tuesday afternoon to complain that someone was trespassing on his property.

The Sheriff's Office received a second call of a shooting at the same location.

Deputies and troopers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol went to the scene where they found Bacon lying on the ground with a bullet wound in his chest.

Head told Sheriff Mike Kite that he had shot Bacon following an altercation, according to the probable cause statement.

Head's Facebook page lists him as a Knox High School graduate. It also says that he graduated from Truman State University in 1976.

It also says that he is a retired police officer with the St. Louis Police Department. He was employed with the department from September 1977 through October 1988, according to David Marzullo, spokesman for the department. Head received an accidental disability retirement.

Knox County Sheriff Mike Kite forwarded all questions about the incident to the Missouri Highway Patrol. Officials at the Adair County Jail confirmed that Head is being held there. He was brought to the jail Thursday evening by the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Kim Johnson, owner of Diner 156 in Novelty, said that Bacon frequented her restaurant sometimes three times per week. She described him as “generous.” Many of the people reporters spoke with in the community Wednesday did not want to go on the record, including his son who returned to the scene to recover his father's vehicle.
