CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (AP) -- Traffic cameras are effective in reducing traffic crashes and the numbers of drivers who run red lights.
That's according to a study by Iowa State University for the Iowa Department of Transportation.
It looks at pilot studies in Davenport and Council Bluffs.
In Davenport, running red lights dropped by 40 percent, while crashes were reduced by 20 percent. In Council Bluffs, running red lights declined by 90 percent and crashes by 44 percent.
The study found no evidence to support public concern that the cameras would increase the number of rear-end collisions by drivers who hit the breaks in trying to avoid running red lights.
