JOHNSTON, IOWA (AP) -- Banning smoking in bars, restaurants and other public places in Iowa could soon be up to local governments.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy says he expects the Legislature to give local governments that power. The Des Moines Democrat says there's overwhelming support among Democrats, who control both chambers.
Governor Culver says he favors a statewide ban on indoor smoking, but could accept giving local governments that ability as a compromise.
If McCarthy's prediction proves accurate, it will mark the second straight year lawmakers have taken on the tobacco industry.
Last year, Iowa approved a $1 per pack increase in the state's cigarette tax.
McCarthy spoke Friday on Iowa Public Television's "Iowa Press" program, which airs this weekend.
