Group says important changes need to be made
MISSOURI (AP) -- An education advocacy group has given Missouri's school policies a D-minus.
Here are some of the highlights of the report by the group StudentsFirst:
- Missouri school districts need to base tenure, pay and layoffs on teacher effectiveness.
- The state needs to create and A through F grading system for schools in the state based on student performance.
- Before a student is placed in the classroom of a teacher that is rated ineffective, the school must get the parents consent.
The report also says that mayors in the state should also get control over low performing schools districts.
StudentsFirst also gave the state of Iowa the grade of "F" when it comes to using tax dollars effectively for education. Governor Terry Branstad spoke out against the grade, but says more is needed to attract good teaching talent to Iowa.
