DES MOINES, IOWA -- A budget battle is brewing at the Statehouse over money for Iowa's community colleges.
Governor Chet Culver rolled out his spending plan Tuesday, and some lawmakers say his budget contains the lowest spending increase for the state's 15 community colleges in four years and cuts faculty pay increases.
Republican and Democratic lawmakers say the governor's plan could pressure key leaders to reconsider raising taxes on corporations.
Culver wants to spend $6.4 billion in the upcoming fiscal year, which is about 6 percent more than this year.
Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal says Culver's plan reduces general state aid for community colleges by about $6 million and erases the $2 million that lawmakers approved for faculty salary increases.
