CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa has received more than $9 million in additional funds from the federal government to help cash-strapped residents pay their heating bills.
Jerry McKim of the Iowa Bureau of Energy Assistance says hopefully, the money will allow the agency to increase the average benefit from $300 to $400.
The new money gives McKim about $45 million to distribute to about 90,000 households in the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
McKim says there were over 248,000 delinquent accounts at the end of December. That's up 11 percent from December 2006.
