KEOKUK, IOWA -- A piece of Keokuk history is on the path to restoration. One Lee County resident created a fundraiser looking to restore the Lee County Dragway in Keokuk.

Alex Peitz grew up in a life of racing, and heard tales of a nearby drag strip from the past.

He wanted to bring these tales back to life.

Peitz created a fundraiser online to raise money for his project.

The new and improved drag strip will be called the Keokuk Drag Way.

Peitz said in order for this dream to become a reality, he is going to need to raise more than one million dollars, and soon. He said there are a number of obstacles in the way beyond raising money, but is confident it will all work out in the end.

"It's a passion of mine, and I don't want to quit. I will never stop trying to get it. It is just something I love and I want. It has been my life dream," Peitz said.

The next step in the process is working on a way to either purchase or lease the land from the current landowner. He then plans to begin rebuilding the strip that has been out of commission since 1988.
