DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Two South Carolina men who pleaded guilty to poaching deer in Iowa face a hefty bill.
State environmental officials say Michael Sillanpaa Junior of Summerville and David Gordon of Goose Creek have been ordered to pay $24,000 in damages, which is based on the value of recovered deer racks.
They must also forfeit more than $5,000 in equipment, and pay $2,100 in fines.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, the men came to Iowa last October. They bought a small game license and paid the habitat fee so they'd have a reason to be in the woods hunting.
They were arrested in November. Officials say they killed deer by shooting crossbows from their car, then returned at night to recover the animals' heads.
