MENDON, ILL. -- Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has laid out his budget plan and now it seems many programs and funds could see significant cuts.

One of those areas that the governor wants to cut is funding for elementary and secondary education.

Quinn wants to cut about 400 million-dollars overall, which would also include cuts to higher education.

If his proposal is passed, districts such as Mendon Unity could see a cut in state aid by as much as $200 thousand dollars.

"I don't think that the governor has a thorough understanding of how schools are funded. Cutting general state aid and transportation funding hurts the downstate rural schools more then it does the Chicago schools or the suburban schools," Mendon Unity Superintendant Diane Robertson.

Governor Quinn's budget also calls for reducing general state aid to school districts by another $150 million dollars next year.

Despite his plan, Illinois lawmakers will have to approve the final budget during the legislative session later this year.
