CHAMPAIGN, ILL. (AP) -- Members of Illinois' congressional delegation say the U.S. Department of Energy has pulled its support of the FutureGen power plant in Mattoon, Illinois.
The Energy Department has said it is frustrated by ballooning costs of the plan to build a virtually emissions-free power plant.
Lawmakers say they were told Tuesday by Energy Department officials that they plan to pull its support for the $1.8 billion project.
The Department of Energy would not publicly divulge its intentions about FutureGen or discuss what was said during the private meeting with lawmakers, saying only that it planned an announcement within days.
But Illinois Senator Dick Durbin says the state will not go down without a fight. Durbin accused the Energy Department of creating false hope for a project that it had no intention of supporting.
