SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- The Illinois Department of Transportation is urging motorists to designate sober drivers this weekend as they attend Super Bowl parties.

The New England Patriots take on the New York Giants on Sunday.

Statistics show that 22 people have died in motor vehicle accidents over the last five Super Bowl Sundays. Alcohol was involved in six of those fatalities.

Illinois law enforcement agencies say they'll have officers and troopers on the roadways conducting safety checks throughout Super Bowl weekend. They say they'll also have increased impaired driving enforcement details.
