ST. CHARLES, MO. (AP) -- Some convicted sex offenders would be banned from parks in St. Charles County under a new proposal.
Councilman Joe McCulloch's measure would ban from the eight county-operated parks those convicted of committing crimes against children. Violators would be warned the first time. After that, they could face fines of up to $500 or up to 90 days in jail.
The ordinance would allow sex offenders to attend events like family reunions, but only if they give authorities notice.
A vote is planned for the end of February.
Florissant, in St. Louis County, passed a similar measure recently.
Some legal experts say the ordinance could face constitutional challenges, depending on how broadly it is written.
