QUINCY, ILL. -- The city of Quincy has received a very special recognition.

During Monday  night's city council meeting, Mayor Spring announced that Quincy had been named one of  the 2012 winner of the Governor's Hometown Award competition.

The city's award was in the memorial category and was for the September 11th memorial on the city hall plaza.

Mayor Spring says that this memorial is a reminder that we should never forget what happened on that day.

Spring says that the city was up against some stiff competition.

He says, "There's a lot of cities that enter this competition each and every year, Governor's Award Winners competition and this is the largest number of cities that have ever entered . So we feel very proud of the fact that we were one of the one chosen in the memorial category."

Quincy has also been recognized for its Trees for Tomorrow campaign.

The city also won an award for the flood fighting efforts of 2008.
