Increased traffic expected when business opens

QUINCY, ILL. -- The plan to bring a new business to the Quincy Riverfront moved one step closer to reality Monday night.

The Quincy City Council approved a recommendation by the Quincy Traffic Commission to put a 4-way stop at the corner of Front and Hampshire Street...next to the former home of the Backwaters night club.

The request came from the building owner who said that a national restaurant chain has expressed interest in opening at the location but  wanted a 4 way stop on that corner.

2nd ward alderman Dave Bauer voted against the proposal because he thought the details were a little vague.

Bauer says, "It's very vague of when it's going to happen or what's even going there. They won't  give anybody any clue  of what's going there. So to me it's hard to vote on something  you don't know a whole lot about."

The building is in  Alderman Jack Holtschlag's 7th ward. He was very glad the Council agreed with the Traffic Commission's recommendation.

He said the key to it for him is that the business is a * national chain* which will hopefully mean longevity in that location.

Holtschlag says, "It's a national chain, plenty of money.  They can ride the storm out, economical times or whatever. It think it will just be huge for the riverfront."

The Traffic Commission's recommendation to the Council states that the 4-way stop would not be put in until closer to the *actual* opening date of the business.

Between 500 to 600 patrons are expected to be added to foot and vehicle traffic in the area once the business opens.
